Announcements for this week

The Tenth Sunday After Pentecost

If you are a newcomer or a visitor—welcome!  Please fill out a contact card found in your pew.  Let’s get to know one another!  St. Joseph’s is a place of worship, prayer, fellowship and study.  Normally we pray Morning Prayer at 7:30 a.m.and Evening Prayer at 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.  Please join us for prayer and fellowship whenever you can.  The “poor plate” located by the baptismal font funds our fellowship and outreach ministries.  Thank you for your gifts!

Clergy schedule:  Karen’s will be on vacation from August 14 through August 21.    If you need pastoral assistance,  please contact Deacon Louane at 919-651-0339( or Deacon James at 919-593-3227(  There will be no Wednesday Healing Eucharist this week.

We welcome our new organist, Joey Fala, who will also spend August – May as a Duke Chapel Organ Scholar.  Joey is a recent graduate of the Yale Institute of Sacred Music and comes to Durham to serve as organ scholar at Duke Chapel. Prior to studying organ, he completed his undergraduate studies in architecture at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. Having grown up in Honolulu, HI, he loves surfing, swimming and eating sushi and looks forward to sharing the Aloha spirit with folks at St. Joe’s.  Welcome, Joey!

Ministry opportunities:  (contact)

*Lead Morning and/or Evening Prayer (James)

* Assist with breakfast (James)

* Clean parish hall weekly (Friday or Saturday) (Karen)

Dear friends, please come celebrate with a cookout on Saturday, August 26th at 5:00 p.m. on the front lawn.  Hopefully, all our summer travelers will be back home, and we can share stories with each other and catch up.  We will provide some burgers (veggie too) and dogs…please bring fixin’s, sides, drinks, and desserts.  And…invite a neighbor or friend to join us!

Dear friends, we are in need of your financial help! Our worship building is 109 years old, and we are needing to make some necessary repairs and would also like to make the building more accessible with a wheelchair ramp out front.  We have a “capital donations” line item for such items.  Here is an estimated breakdown of expenses.

*Roof repair: $2,500 (work completed due to water leaking inside the sanctuary)

*Video camera system: $4,100

*Foundation repairs (new piers under two corners of nave): cost unknown at this time

*Installation of wheelchair ramp and grading of land away from building: $6,000+

Any contribution is helpful, and given the age of the buildings, this is likely to be an ongoing budget item.  Many thanks for all your support of St. Joseph’s!

Collection for St. Joseph’s community in need:   We invite you to bring any of the following items and place them in the basket at the back of the church for our breakfast and outreach needs; these items are part of the offerings of our life and labor.

  • ground coffee
  • toilet paper/paper towels
  • tee shirts
  • grits
  • men’s underwear (32, 34, 36)
  • socks
